Water equals life. Next to air, water is our most precious resource. We cannot live without water. While most of the planet is covered in water, Freshwater, however, only makes up about three percent of earth’s total water. Less than one third of 1% of this fresh water is available for human use. Nearly six billion people live on earth and rely on such a small percentage. In some areas of the world, access to clean water is limited or unavailable due to contamination. Fresh, clean water is a limited resource, it is important for us all to preserve and conserve water whenever possible.
Everyone uses water each day, whether it be at home, school or work. There are loads of really small changes that you could make which all add up to make a big difference to the environment! For example, about 30% of total water used in the household is through toilet flushing. In the UK alone, there are around 45 million toilets in UK homes – this equates to flushing an estimated 2 billion litres of water every day!. To save water, you should use a water efficient toilet. Older toilets use around five or six gallons of water every time they are flushed. New models of toilet use around 1.6 gallons of water per flush. Some models also have a dual flush option. Dual flush toilets typically use 4-6 litres of water opposed to the old style flush systems which use a massive 13 litres per flush. Dual flush toilets have a split flush button which gives the user the choice of how much water to use. We can all help reduce waste and save more water by making small behavioural changes and by choosing more water efficient products.
As our population grows, more and more people need this limited resource. Also, the more water consumed the less there is available for the environment and future generation. Therefore, it is important that we use water wisely.
